Michael Vick and White People’s Obsession With Punishing Him
Michael Vick was recent nominated as a Pro-Bowl captain, and white folks lost their collective minds. Let me go on record to say this is not about being a fan of Michael Vick’s. This is not about me being a supporter or a defender. I personally think it’s disgusting the way that he has remained silent on most things involving the struggles of his fellow African Americans, and I think he’s an ashy hotep for some of his inflammatory comments against Colin Kaepernick and his great social justice work.
This is about white people’s obsession with punishing Brown and Black bodies, while refusing to acknowledge the transgressions of their own. In regards to Michael Vick, in 2007, he was convicted of arranging illegal dog fights. As a result, he was punished with a 17 month stint in a federal prison in Leavenworth and fined heavily.
Since his prison stint, he has lawfully regained his right to own a dog, has traveled the country speaking about treating animals with respect, and apologized profusely for his actions…did I mention he spent 17 months in Leavenworth?
Despite this large retribution, when you mention his name, white people’s heads swivel like something from the Poltergeist movie, and they go into a tirade about animals, how he deserves to be treated like the animals he harmed, how he’s a piece of shit…they turn two different…
