I’m the Latest Casualty in Trump’s Amerikkka
I voted for Kamala Harris! There was no other choice for me, as a disabled Black man. Voting third party was essentially throwing a vote away, and staying home was not an option. Too much was at stake. Voting for the orange guy was like voting for Lucifer himself, and I knew the country would be in peril.
Unfortunately, he won or cheated, depending upon your perspective. But whether you voted for Kamala Harris or not, everyone has to bear the repercussions of this man’s ascension to the throne. One such area is my dialysis treatment.
Binders are these horse sized pills that I take at meal time to help regulate my diet and to keep my phosphorous levels at acceptable levels. Prior to the current administration, I would notify my kidney doctor or nephrologist, he would send the order to my local pharmacy, and I could pick up the prescription the same day. Seamless and absolutely no worries.
Now I have to call my dialysis center, speak to the charge nurse; she has to relay the message to the dietician, and the dietician has to get the nephrologist to sign off before the medication can be ordered. A process that normally took a few hours, now takes several days.
Did I mention that I need this medication to keep my phosphorous levels low, and my levels are important not only to sustain my life, but I’m currently on the kidney transplant list, so my levels are extremely important?
Truth is, I won’t die without these pills, but my life becomes more tenuous without them. In all honesty, it really shouldn’t be this difficult to obtain one’s prescriptions in the richest country in the world!
