Cardi B: Unbothered and Untamed, Which Is Why You’re Mad

Nothing bothers sexists and racists alike, more than an unapologetic and self-assured woman. I remember reading, Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, in my freshman English class, and I was struck how the protagonist Janie Crawford was a woman ahead of her time, and how the whole novel was very autobiographical, while at the same time being fiction. I was eighteen at the time. Every year since, I have been reminded that one of the most lethal things to a man’s manhood and society’s atrocities against people of color, is to find a woman who is unbothered by scorn, contempt, or judgment.

On Sunday afternoon rapper Cardi B, tweeted out the following “Should I buy this $88,000 purse or no?” Black Twitter lost their minds. Most of the individuals responding were angry that in the middle of a pandemic that she would be so callous and tone deaf when so many are suffering both economically and emotionally. But like always, I never follow the prevailing social media mindset, and I disagree with all of them.

If you have followed Cardi B for any length of time, then you know she is an over sharer. From her sex life with her husband, to her party locations, even when her baby poops, she is very consistent with sharing the intimate and sometimes very personal, details of her life.
